Parents Internship Network (PIN) Frequently Asked Questions

Does the internship have to be paid?

The goal of the PIN initiative is to offer paid summer internships, but we won’t turn down any meaningful opportunity that offers Hopkins students a chance to gain real world experience and learn more about a possible career direction.

What is the typical pay?

Some internships offer a stipend while others are paid hourly. The rate is also dependent upon the region of the country and prevailing wages in the industry. In general, students between their junior and senior year may make between $15 - $20 per hour while younger students may make between $10 - $15 per hour.

Do I need to offer or include housing?

No, students arrange their own housing if they plan to take an internship outside of their hometown. You’d also be surprised at how many Hopkins undergraduates may live near, or have a relative or family friend who lives near, the internship.

How long does the internship last?

That is really up to the employer, but typically they last anywhere from 6 to 10 weeks.

Do I have to own my own company to offer a summer internship?

No, while some Hopkins parents own their own business, many work for larger employers who already have summer internship programs in place or who may be able to offer an internship. If the company you work for hires summer interns, please talk with your HR department or the person in charge of the internship program to see if you might be able to facilitate posting those openings on the Hopkins job board (jhu.joinhandshake.com). Once you get the go-ahead, click the link below for more information and let us know who to contact within your organization to create the job posting. Your HR department can also send details of the job posting directly to internship@jhu.edu and name you as the sponsoring parent – we’ll take it from there.

What if I have a friend or family member who can offer an internship?

Fantastic! We want the Parents Internship Network to have a broad reach, which means if you can use your network of family or friends to help generate internships for our Hopkins students, we’re all for it. If you have someone for us to talk to, click the link below we’ll take it from there.

What is my role over the summer?

Your role with the student depends upon your role in the company. If you manage or work for the company, it would be great if you can act in a mentoring role. This may mean interaction daily, weekly or just a couple of times throughout the summer, depending upon how closely you work with the position. If you’re not directly associated with the company, it would still be great if you could meet the student at least once during the summer.

What is the actual process for posting or advertising an internship?

  • If you’re ready to post an internship, you can email internship@jhu.edu with the details. Already have a job description? Great - include it in the email. Need help creating the job description? We’re here to help write it once we receive your email. After we receive your email, someone from the Career Center will contact you to gather any additional information needed and to create the actual job posting on jhu.joinhandshake.com - the student portal into the Career Center.

  • If you previously requested more information and have been contacted by someone from PIN or the Career Center, let that person know that you’d like to proceed with offering an internship opportunity. You’ll then be contacted by a Career Center team member who will compile any missing information and create the job posting on Handshake.

What should I do if a Hopkins student accepts a PIN internship in my company?

To close the loop and help improve the program for the future, it is important for us to know that you hired a Hopkins student. If you are able to facilitate the offering of an internship position, please report back to the JHU Career Center to confirm the outcome by emailing internship@jhu.edu.
